They were found in the explorations of the Sierras de Guasayán in the south-west of Santiago del Estero. Due to their typology and manufacturing technique, they can be classified as early. The mortars were used for grinding cebil seeds, used as a hallucinogen by ancient hunter-gatherer societies. The variety of mortars found is likely to correspond to the diversity of their use. Other psychoactive plants or a combination of them may have been used. Chañar fruits were also ground in them for food.
They also used the fruit of the carob tree to make an alcoholic drink called aloja, and with maize they made chicha, which is also a strong and easily intoxicating drink.
